STAKEHOLDERS DIALOGUE ON THE ROLE OF TEACHERS IN SAFEGUIDING STUDENTS DIGITAL EXPOSURE IN NIGERIA

Image
The digital world is already the classroom for Nigeria's youth, but are our teachers and education systems equipped to guide them safely? Last week, I had the honour of representing iLEAD AFRICA at the high-level Stakeholders Dialogue on Education, convened by the Dean Initiative in Abuja on the theme: The Role of Teachers in Safeguarding Students’ Digital Exposure. This discussion is critically urgent. Nigeria now has over 148 million internet subscribers (as of late 2025, with continued rapid growth in 2026 per NCC data), and young people form a major share. Many students become digitally active well before age 13, particularly in urban centres. Yet structured guidance and safety measures are not keeping pace. Key insights from the dialogue: 1) Students are true digital natives; many teachers still lack sufficient preparation. 2) Exposure to online platforms is widespread, but digital safety and citizenship awareness remains low. 3) Schools la...

Abuja Project Advocacy Visit

Image
On 23 December 2025, we visited the Hakimin of Dutsen Alhaji Palace in Bwari Area Council to advance the Path to Peace Foundation flagship initiative #AbujaProject,  a mission committed to local government autonomy, transparency, fiscal responsibility, and inclusive governance across the FCT. The discussion reaffirmed the importance of traditional leaders as vital partners in strengthening local governance and ensuring policies reflect community realities. This visit also wrapped up my advocacy work for 2025 as the Bwari Area Council Coordinator, a year dedicated to grassroots engagement and institutional accountability. As we move forward, the goal remains firm: stronger partnerships, empowered local councils, and governance that truly serves the people. Nigeria works best when governance works locally. #AbujaProject #LocalGovernanceMatters #BwariAreaCouncil #FCTAbuja #GrassrootsAdvocacy #CommunityLeadership #LGAutonomy

This experience has deepened my understanding of the policy ecosystem and strengthened my c...

Guaranteed on Paper, Denied in Practice: The Crisis of Local Governance in Abuja

Image
Guaranteed on Paper, Denied in Practice: The Crisis of Local Governance in Abuja I walked into the hall carrying a question that, quietly, many Nigerians have likely asked: “Who really runs my local area?” I left with a clear and unsettling answer, one shaped by constitutional insight and the stark realities on the ground. At a recent lecture hosted by the Path to Peace Foundation under The Abuja Project Fellowship, themed “Understanding the Landscape of Local Governance in the Federal Capital Territory and the State of Local Government Autonomy,” the discussion went beyond theory. It was a candid diagnosis of a patient we often overlook, our local governments, the third tier of governance where democracy should be closest to the people. The story of local government in Nigeria is both inspiring and troubling. It began with great promise, boldly enshrined in our Constitution. Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) could not be clearer: “The system of local gover...

Reimagining Local Governance in the FCT — Insights from Today’s Abuja Project Fellowship Session

Image
Today, I had the privilege of attending an insightful lecture hosted by the Path to Peace Foundation under #TheAbujaProject Fellowship , on the theme: “Understanding the Landscape of Local Governance in the Federal Capital Territory and the State of Local Government Autonomy.”   The session was facilitated by Associate Professor Hakeem Onapajo, Ph.D, Assistant Director at the Legislative Centre for Security Analysis, National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Abuja, offered a deep and thought-provoking analysis of how local government autonomy is structured and too often constrained within Nigeria’s governance system.   From our discussion, it became clear that:   • The State–Local Government Joint Account (SJLGA) system continues to weaken fiscal independence at the local level.   • In the FCT, Area Councils operate under limited autonomy, with financial oversight heavily centralized through the FCTA and the Joint Area Council...

Kwara's False Sense of Security: How Complacency Risks a Regional Catastrophe

Image
Kwara's False Sense of Security: How Complacency Risks a Regional Catastrophe The crackle of gunfire shattered the night calm in Patigi Local Government Area last August. For hours, residents hid in terror as militants believed to be linked to the Mahmuda terrorist faction ransacked homes and farms, leaving behind a trail of displacement and despair. This wasn't in conflict-ridden Zamfara or Borno. This was Kwara State, Nigeria's so-called "State of Harmony" now facing the brutal reality of spillover violence from neighboring conflicts. For years, Kwara has basked in its reputation as an oasis of peace. While northern states battled insurgencies and northwestern states negotiated with bandits, Kwara's security strategy largely involved resting on these laurels. This complacency is now our greatest vulnerability. As armed groups face increasing pressure in Nigeria's northwest and the Sahel, they are seeking new territories and routes and Kwara...

Pragmatic Leadership and Conflict Resolution in Governance

Image
Pragmatic Leadership and Conflict Resolution in Governance   Yesterday’s leadership training by the Offa Comrade Community offered a timely reflection on what it means to lead effectively in today’s governance landscape. True leadership goes beyond authority; it’s about foresight, empathy, and the ability to turn conflict into an instrument for institutional growth.   In governance and community development, conflict is inevitable. Yet, pragmatic leaders don’t react impulsively, they anticipate challenges, communicate transparently, and make data-informed decisions that uphold trust, accountability, and inclusion.   Key insights that resonated most: 🔹 Emotional Intelligence: Leadership begins with empathy and self-awareness. The ability to stay calm and connect meaningfully. 🔹 Negotiation for Mutual Gains: Collaboration thrives when all voices are respected and valued. 🔹 Active Listening & Feedback: Listening to understand, not to reply, transforms disa...

Community-Based Peacebuilding: A Vital Strategy Against Rising Banditry and Insecurity in Kwara StateCommunity-Based Peacebuilding: A Vital Strategy Against Rising Banditry and Insecurity in Kwara State

Image
The surge in bandit attacks across Kwara State has led to numerous deaths, abductions, and widespread displacement, highlighting a severe security crisis that calls for comprehensive approaches beyond traditional military responses. As the region confronts these multifaceted threats, locally driven peacebuilding efforts—led by peace committees, traditional leaders, and NGOs—stand out as essential for achieving lasting stability. Traditional rulers serve as central figures in grassroots conflict resolution throughout Kwara and Nigeria. Their deep-rooted influence and close community connections allow them to mediate disputes, rally resources, and promote unity. They organize elder councils, settle grievances, and guide local authorities, influencing peace at the local level. Yet, their effectiveness is hampered by political meddling, lack of legal support, funding shortages, and poor coordination with official security bodies. Bolstering their legal authority and establishin...

NIGERIA MINNING WEEK

Image
NIGERIA MINNING WEEK   Last week I had the privilege of representing the Nigeria Governors' Forum at the Nigeria Mining Week in Abuja, organized by the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development.  This event was a game-changer, intentionally designed to tackle complex challenges such as regulatory frameworks, illegal mining, inadequate infrastructure, and climate-resilient mining practices. As a climate activist, I was particularly intrigued by the discussions around ensuring safety for children and women in artisanal mining.  The Nigeria Mining Week provided a unique opportunity to engage with policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders to position Nigeria's mining sector as a cornerstone of our economy. The exhibition tour was an eye-opener, showcasing cutting-edge technologies that offer sustainable solutions to the challenges facing Nigeria's mining sector. As an advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), I'm excited about the potent...

LOVE YOUR JOB: RETHINKING THE NOBILITY OF WORK IN A SOCIETAL CONTEXT.

Image
Love Your Job: Rethinking the Nobility of Work in a Societal Context By - Iranloye Sofiu Taiye (Optimism Mirror) In today's society, the value placed on labor appears to be diminishing, leading to job seekers being labeled as lacking vision. The prevailing mindset prioritizes monetary gain over the intrinsic significance of the work itself and fails to question the ethical implications of wealth accumulation. Throughout the annals of history, labor has consistently been regarded as noble, transcending various economic systems such as feudalism, the industrial revolution, legitimate trade, slave trade, colonialism, and the post-colonial era. Regardless of the prevailing economic orientation, whether capitalist, socialist, or communist, the consensus remains that individuals must sell their labor, skills, or ideas to earn a commensurate wage, stipend, or salary. Selling one's labor is undeniably the most legitimate means of earning a living. However, it is worth pondering why emp...

CRUSHING THE NIGERIAN POLITICAL PAROCHIALISM IS BEYOND CRUCIFYING THE PARTY DELEGATES.

Image
CRUSHING THE NIGERIAN POLITICAL PAROCHIALISM IS BEYOND CRUCIFYING THE PARTY DELEGATES. By - Iranloye Sofiu Taiye  I will discuss why the justifications that occasioned the parochial political idiosyncrasies should be negated and substituted with rational/progressive Political mannerisms, before crucifying the party delegates for now It is no more a rumor but a reality, that primary elections ongoing in the country have been marred and blemished with vote buying, which translates to the highest bidder getting the votes. Most of the delegates participating in ongoing party primary elections across the country are induced if not influenced by money by political party aspirants to cast their votes against competency, rich manifestos, and purposeful representation. However, the inducement of the delegates by aspirants with humongous cash has catalyzed a serious and very hot debate by Nigerians both on social media platforms and offline. My subscription on this debate ...

ON PSEUDO-INTELLECTUAL ENGAGEMENT IN NIGERIA SOCIAL MEDIA - By IRANLOYE SOFIU TAIYE (Optimism Mirror)

Image
ON PSEUDO-INTELLECTUAL ENGAGEMENT IN NIGERIA SOCIAL MEDIA By Iranloye Sofiu Taiye One of the essential elements that strengthen the unity of countries with numerous ethnicities is the mutually esteemed mode of communication, respect for their diversities, and by extension, mutual political relationship. But presently, the Nigeria social media fora are nothing but a channel for perpetrating, promoting, and sowing seeds of national discord, anchored on the uncivilized conduct of the politician and the supporters of political parties. It’s now conspicuous, apparent, and plausible that the spurious actions of the users of the social media platforms encompassing Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp groups have nourished the already perturbed and suffocating political terrain.  Glaringly, this is an indication that we have a long battle to wrestle with, considering the pandemonium that had ravaged the online space aftermath of this year’s general election. It’s very dis...

NIGERIA- Prognosis and challenges against the incoming government by IRANLOYE SOFIU TAIYE

Image
NIGERIA : Prognosis and challenges against the incoming government.  Nigeria became an independent State on the 1st of October 1960 from her former British colonial masters which ushered Nigeria to the comity of a sovereign state and membership of the United Nations (UN) after decades of British colonial administration officially came to an end (1900 - 1960). On the eve of independence, our nationalists and indegionious politicians were given the mandate to administer Nigeria after rigorous agitations struggles, and movements by our nationalists who fought passionately to attain self-rule and independence subsequently. It was a memorable period when millions of Nigerian citizens both at home and in the diaspora troops out with Nigerian flags to celebrate and jubilate the end of the British colonial rule on our father's land.  Nigeria is a heterogeneous and multiethnic state with multifaceted socio-economic and political backgrounds, these invariably made Nigeria a ...

Arm yourself with skills and personal development, a wake-up call for the Youth by Sheu Abdulmumin Opeyemi.

The news of nominees for commissioners in Kwara State has put many people in awe and been met with surprise from a lot of people.  Offa is known to be a community with over 100,000 population in the southern part of Kwara State, The language of the residents is Yorùbá, as the ancient town belongs to/is the head of Ibolo Providence of the old Oyo Empire.  The town has produced well over 100 professors in numerous academic fields.  The nomination of Dr Amina El-Imam, a senior lecturer in the Department of Microbiology, University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) as a commissioner in Kwara using Offa slot looks like a nightmare to many as the regular politicians that the people know and was expecting were not nominated for commissionership.  In fact, same could be said for all nominees in Kwara; majority of them are not political gladiators. They are rather a breed of technocrats and academicians with proven excellences in their different fields. This was peculiar in th...
