STAKEHOLDERS DIALOGUE ON THE ROLE OF TEACHERS IN SAFEGUIDING STUDENTS DIGITAL EXPOSURE IN NIGERIA


The digital world is already the classroom for Nigeria's youth, but are our teachers and education systems equipped to guide them safely?

Last week, I had the honour of representing iLEAD AFRICA at the high-level Stakeholders Dialogue on Education, convened by the Dean Initiative in Abuja on the theme: The Role of Teachers in Safeguarding Students’ Digital Exposure.

This discussion is critically urgent. Nigeria now has over 148 million internet subscribers (as of late 2025, with continued rapid growth in 2026 per NCC data), and young people form a major share. Many students become digitally active well before age 13, particularly in urban centres. Yet structured guidance and safety measures are not keeping pace.



Key insights from the dialogue:

1) Students are true digital natives; many teachers still lack sufficient preparation.

2) Exposure to online platforms is widespread, but digital safety and citizenship awareness remains low.

3) Schools largely lack formal digital citizenship frameworks.

There's a clear misalignment between national policies and on-the-ground classroom realities.

The dialogue convened essential stakeholders, including: Federal Ministry of Education, National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Civil society organisations and dedicated education practitioners

What stood out most: a persistent gap between students' lived digital experiences and educators' capacity to support safe, productive engagement, plus a shared call for practical, scalable tools and solutions.


As Digital Governance and Democracy Program Associate at iLEAD Africa, I presented Civic Padi, our innovative AI civic tech platform that makes civic education engaging, accessible, and centred on responsible digital citizenship for young Nigerians.

I advocated strongly for: Strategic partnerships between government institutions and civic tech innovators, and Equipping teachers with practical digital safety resources and training

The simple truth:

Access without guidance = risk

Guidance without effective tools = limited impact. We need both urgently.
