Digital Governance and Technology for Local Government Administration in Nigeria

On Thursday, 19th of March, 2026 I had the privilege of facilitating a session on “Digital Governance and Technology for Local Government Administration in Nigeria” during the ProActinLG Capacity Building Workshop held in Keffi, Nasarawa State, in commemoration of #OGP Week.

The workshop convened State and Local Government officials, representatives from the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftain Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Budget and Planning, civil society leaders, media organizations, public affairs analysts, academics, and governance advocates to discuss practical pathways for strengthening grassroots governance in Nigeria.

During my presentation, I emphasized that digital governance is no longer optional for public institutions. It is now a critical requirement for transparency, accountability, citizen trust, data-driven governance, and efficient service delivery.

I also highlighted how technology can help state and local governments strengthen accountability systems, improve citizen participation, enhance public communication, and support responsive governance across communities.

A major highlight of the engagement was the review of the Sub-National Development Index Report presented by the Executive Director of iLEAD AFRICA. The advocacy report exposed critical infrastructure and development gaps across communities in Nasarawa State using geo-tagged photographs and field-based evidence. The report provided practical insight into the realities many citizens face daily, including poor access to roads, water, electricity, schools, and other essential services.

The workshop also featured strategic sessions on:
• Operationalizing Local Government Autonomy
• Fiscal Autonomy and Participatory Budgeting
• Open Government Partnership (OGP) Localization

The engagement reinforced the importance of evidence-based advocacy, institutional collaboration, and technology-driven governance in strengthening democratic accountability and grassroots development in Nigeria.

I appreciate the management and team of iLEAD AFRICA partners, and all participants for advancing this important conversation on governance reform and inclusive development.
