AI for Democracy: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Democratic Processes in Nigeria
New policy brief released 📚💥
Artificial Intelligence #AI is changing the way democratic systems function. The policy question is no longer whether AI will influence democracy, but how institutions can govern its impact responsibly.
I am pleased to share a policy brief I contributed to as part of my work with iLEAD AFRICA:
"AI for Democracy: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Democratic Processes in Nigeria."
Through this work, I explored how AI is reshaping critical dimensions of Nigeria's democratic ecosystem, including elections, governance, civic participation, information integrity, digital rights, and democratic resilience.
The research also provided an opportunity to examine the emerging opportunities and risks associated with AI adoption. While AI can support more efficient public institutions, expand civic participation, and improve access to information, it also presents serious concerns around misinformation, manipulation, exclusion, privacy, accountability, and the integrity of democratic processes.
One of the key lessons from this work is that AI governance cannot be separated from democratic governance.
As Nigeria advances its digital transformation, policymakers, democratic institutions, civil society, and citizens must develop the capacity to understand, govern, and responsibly use emerging technologies.
This policy brief is designed to contribute to that conversation by providing practical insights for policymakers, civil society actors, youth leaders, and democratic institutions working at the intersection of technology and governance.
I am particularly interested in continuing research and policy conversations around AI, Digital Governance, Civic-Tech, and Democracy, especially how responsible technology can strengthen institutions, protect citizens, and build democratic resilience in Nigeria and across Africa.
