INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON YOUTH DEVELOPMENT.
On Sunday 19th June, 2022, we held a sensitisation program for secondary School students and parents in Offa, upon the invitation of Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWAN), Offa Local government branch, as part of their FOMWAN Week program. At the FOMWAN hall Offa Kwara State.
The theme of the sensitisation program is "The influence of the use of social media on the youth development". This topic was careful selected because social media is one of the dynamics responsible for alteration of our societal orientations in which it influence is apperent in all our aspects of life, ranging from, education, business activities, religious, communication and so on.
The essence of the sensitisation is to intensifies our campaign for Youth development and to expose our Youth to the utilities and hidden potentials of the positive usage and the consequences of the abuse of social media contents. This was the first series of the sensitisation program of the Optimism for Youth Advocacy Foundation-OYA.
The one day sensitisation program featured, brief speech on the objectives of the foundation and modesty for the women folk by the secretary of the foundation Miss Adebayo Aisha, after which the lecture was delivered by the founder, Comr. Iranloye Sofiu Taiye. Both the students and their parents participated actively, of which they all pledged to utilize social media to promote Youth development.
Responding, the participants all expressed their profound appreciation to the Foundation for the sensitisation. Some of the parents and students also contributed after the lecture, affirming that positive usage of social media can influence youth positively.
One of the students who responded stated that she had before now, concluded that social media cannot contribute to student educational development. Rather just a platform to chat with loved ones and catch fun. She said are orientation has changed, because the lecture as uncover some opportunities for her as a student, on how to advance her career through the use of social media.
Apropos of the comments and reactions from the participant, we believe the social media revolution will not only promote the digital literacy, but also will advance youth development in our country.
