AI AND YOUTH POLICY ROUNDTABLE IN COMMEMORATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY, 2026

Image
I had the privilege of moderating the AI and Youth Policy Roundtable in Abuja, themed “Responsible AI Adoption for Youth and by the Youth”, as part of International Youth Day 2026. Convened under iLEAD AFRICA AI for All Initiative, the dialogue examined how Nigeria can move from AI strategy to responsible adoption, with strong attention to digital governance, AI policy, data governance, algorithmic accountability, AI literacy, and civic technology. As moderator, I guided discussions on the opportunities and risks of AI adoption, the need for inclusive AI governance, and the role of young people in shaping policies that govern emerging technologies. A key outcome was a Youth-led Declaration advancing AI literacy, ethical AI use, responsible innovation, and participatory AI governance in Nigeria.

Civic-Tech: Beyond Digitisation, Toward Democratic Resilience

Image
Civic-Tech: Beyond Digitisation, Toward Democratic Resilience The digital revolution has fundamentally reshaped the relationship between citizens and the state. Governance is increasingly moving from one-way information dissemination toward interactive ecosystems built on real-time feedback, data exchange, and digital participation. Yet, a critical question remains for developing democracies: Is technology simply a tool for administrative efficiency, or can it become an instrument for more participatory, responsive, and accountable governance? This is where Civic-Tech becomes consequential.  Civic-Tech refers to the strategic use of digital technologies to strengthen civic participation, public accountability, government responsiveness, and the relationship between citizens and public institutions. It goes beyond digitising existing processes. It seeks to redesign the feedback loop between citizens and the state. Its applications are diverse. They include open data plat...

AI for Democracy: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Democratic Processes in Nigeria

Image
New policy brief released 📚💥 Artificial Intelligence #AI is changing the way democratic systems function. The policy question is no longer whether AI will influence democracy, but how institutions can govern its impact responsibly. I am pleased to share a policy brief I contributed to as part of my work with iLEAD AFRICA: "AI for Democracy: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Democratic Processes in Nigeria." Through this work, I explored how AI is reshaping critical dimensions of Nigeria's democratic ecosystem, including elections, governance, civic participation, information integrity, digital rights, and democratic resilience. The research also provided an opportunity to examine the emerging opportunities and risks associated with AI adoption. While AI can support more efficient public institutions, expand civic participation, and improve access to information, it also presents serious concerns around misinformation, manipulation, exclusion, privacy,...

Digital Governance Is More Than Putting Government Services Online

Image
Digital Governance Is More Than Putting Government Services Online 📌 When we talk about Digital Governance, the conversation often focuses on putting government services online. While digital service delivery is an important part of the process, Digital Governance goes far beyond digitizing existing government processes. It is about how governments use technology, data, digital systems, and innovation to strengthen institutions, improve public services, engage citizens, enhance accountability, and support better decision-making. A government can have sophisticated digital platforms and still struggle with poor service delivery, weak accountability, limited citizen participation, or low public trust. The real measure of digital transformation is therefore not simply whether a government has digital platforms, but whether citizens can access and benefit from them, whether public services become more efficient and inclusive, whether citizens can meaningfully engage with insti...

Digital Governance Starts at the Grassroots: Why Local Governments Matter More Than You Think

Image
Digital Governance Starts at the Grassroots: Why Local Governments Matter More Than You Think 📌 We often measure Nigeria's governance performance by what happens in Abuja or at the state level. Yet the quality of governance that citizens experience every day is determined much closer to home. That is why local governments deserve far more attention than they currently receive. Nigeria's 774 Local Government Areas sit at the frontline of public service delivery. They are expected to provide primary healthcare, maintain rural roads, support basic education, manage markets, improve sanitation, promote agricultural extension, and perform several other responsibilities that directly affect people's lives. When these institutions function effectively, communities notice. When they do not, the consequences are immediate. This reality becomes even more significant when viewed alongside data from the National Bureau of Statistics showing that more than 63 percent of Nig...

Three Governance Trends That Will Shape Africa by 2030 🎯

Image
Three Governance Trends That Will Shape Africa by 2030 🎯 Africa is approaching a decisive governance transition. Demographic expansion, rapid urbanisation, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and evolving citizen expectations are fundamentally redefining the relationship between the state and society. Notwithstanding the immense opportunities before the continent, governance outcomes will ultimately depend on institutional capacity, evidence driven decision making, and the political will to implement sustainable reforms. Three trends deserve sustained attention. 1. Digital public governance will become the defining architecture of state effectiveness. Digital transformation extends far beyond automating public services. It represents a fundamental shift in how governments deliver value, strengthen accountability, enhance revenue mobilisation, and foster citizen participation. The critical challenge will not be technological adoption. It will be establishing ro...

Why Evidence Matter in Public Policy

Image
Research & Reflection ⏰ Why Evidence Matters in Public Policy Every public policy begins with a problem. The quality of the solution depends on the quality of the evidence behind it. When governments rely on assumptions instead of credible data, they risk investing scarce resources in interventions that fail to address the real needs of citizens. Evidence enables policymakers to identify priorities, allocate resources efficiently, measure outcomes, and refine interventions based on what works. This principle has been reinforced throughout my professional journey.  Working on the Sub-National Development Index (#SNDI) Report across rural communities in Nasarawa State deepened my appreciation for community-generated evidence. The assessment revealed that development priorities differ significantly across communities. While one community identified access to clean water as its most urgent need, another prioritised healthcare, education, or road ...
